QUICK LOOK: Uncanny

The first volume of 'Uncanny' the new work by Andy Diggle (The Losers) along with artist Aaron Campbell came out this week. A criminal caper story involving high stakes action amongst human beings possessing supernatural gifts.

The story follows a man by the name of Dominic Weaver, but that isn't his real name. He lives on the run using his extraordinary talent to survive and live off of others. This is quite literal in a sense as Dominic is a psychometh; that is, he can gain the memories and talents of anyone he touches for a brief period of time. He uses these to gamble, fight and exploit others for his own gain. But one day he pushes his luck too far and finds himself being hunted down for his debts.

Suddenly he finds himself aided by a femme fatale with her own set of skills who promises him a new life if he uses his talents to help her employer. A job that requires them to steal classified information that could be the key to why people like them exist and how to make more of them. But nothing is as clear cut as it seems when ulterior motives come to the forefront on both sides of the equations. Is Dominic being used? And how can he turn the tables in his favor? And hasn't he wanted to know precisely who he is and why he is the way he is?



For those familiar with Diggle's work, particularly on the Losers can look forward to another work of criminal noir with plenty of action and double crosses. Tension is tight, mysteries are deep, and the more involved it gets, the more dangerous the stakes for everyone involved. Aaron Campbell's artwork is servicable here with the right amount of grit and with William Crabtree's colouring creating nice contrasting and monochromatic hues to give the scenes its mood and atmosphere.



Anyone looking for something new to read that likes the work of writers like Ed Brubaker, Kirkman and Jason Aaron might like to check out the first volume of 'Uncanny' from Dynamite. Now available in store!

Batman: Arkham Knight trailer!

A new entry in the Batman: Arkham games has been officially announced. It's once again done by Rocksteady who created the first two entries - Batman: Arkham Asylum, and Batman: Arkham City. They say that 'Arkham Knight' will be the final Batman game they are working on and they want to go out strong! By that they simply mean that they will no longer be making Batman games, not that WB won't continue to find other teams to work on more Batman games.

One of the exciting things about the new game is that it's being developed exclusively for next-gen systems and the PC! So there'll be the obvious jump in detail, a bigger city, more enemies on screen and now the Batmobile will be a big focus of the game where you can call it at any time! Also a new original villain is also being created to be the antagonist this time! Exciting stuff! You can check out the new CG trailer that was released below to get an idea of where they're going with all this.

The Lego Movie REVIEW

I'm catching this one quite late, but for those who haven't been keeping up, my curiosity was peaked when this film was getting unexpectedly great reviews across the board. What might've seemed like just a full length advertisement does actually have a lot of heart and soul and turns out to be one of the most uniquely animated films to come out of the studio system in a long time!

In the world of Lego, there exists your basic construction guy piece named Emmert Brickowski, who is the sort of guy always looking to fit in and conform, but then ends up being just a generic un-special guy. This changes when he finds himself stuck to a mysterious object that according to a prophecy regards him as the special master-builder who will save the Lego world from the machinations of an evil corporation.

The film is filled from start to finish with humour that manages to be appealing to both adults and children with some very clever things spread out throughout the film's messages that also turns the whole 'chosen one' trope on its head.All of which is ultimately elevated to an allegory of the connection between a father and son. Anyone who's grown up with Lego will certainly chuckle at how the film-makers actually exploit our own memories and interactions with the product and incorporate all that we associate with the brand into the film's world and plot. Certainly it's undeniably a giant commercial for Lego, but by the end you'll be wishing all commercials were this good and this heartfelt! Look closer and you'll see many clever parodies from the Matrix, Terminator, Metal Gear and even clever subtle satire of real life concerns about manufactured pop-culture, conformity, corporatism, politics, propaganda and more!


The animation is also excellent here and a  great break from the norm! A completely CG film that attempts to recreate the stop-motion feel of Lego sets and pieces rendered to be photo-real. And even smarter is that the riggers stuck to keeping the movements of the Lego characters just as articulate as they are in the actual product, which forces the animators to find new ways of expression within those limits and this gives the film's animation the bulk of its charm; something that works far better than the other Lego CG renditions in games and other direct-to-home video results that chose to make the characters more flexible than they really are.


There's a lot to love here, and the film has been doing big box office for good reasons! So take your families to check it out if you haven't already! I didn't watch it in 3-D, so I don't know how that is... But I know that I left there feeling like breaking out my old Lego sets in a bag in a box somewhere and going to town with them! The film is really just like how I actually used to play with my own Lego, spaceships and all! Also get ready to experience the best Batman and the best Batman theme song you'll ever hear!

No doubt fans already know that Toei is working on a new anime adaptation of the Sailor Moon manga from scratch. It has announced the title 'Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal' which will begin premiere in July. A new key visual was also leaked early below, along with a synopsis.


"Usagi Tsukino is a second-year middle school girl who is a little clumsy and a crybaby, but she is full of energy. One day, she meets Luna, a black cat with a crescent moon on her forehead, and she transforms into Sailor Moon, a sailor-uniformed pretty guardian of love and justice! As a chosen guardian of justice, Usagi seems to have a mission to find the Illusionary Silver Crystal with the other guardians and to protect the princess. 
Meanwhile, the queen of the Dark Kingdom, Queen Beryl, also sends minions to the town where Usagi lives to obtain the Illusionary Silver Crystal, which has immense power. This causes strange events to unfold…. 

Can Sailor Moon really find the Illusionary Silver Crystal with the other Sailor guardians, and protect the princess…!?"

In time for the 10th anniversary of the light novels, the new season takes place a year and a half after the first series. No release date is given yet, but I'm sure we'll hear more in due time! Japan's World Cup Team mascot is... Pikachu!

The Japan National Football team is sure to be getting an "electrifying  boost" in this World Cup with news that one of the most famous video game characters in history will be headed to Brazil as the team's official mascot, along with 10 other characters from the successful Pokemon franchise. 

Adidas, the designers of the Japanese National team kit in Brazil, announced the news that the iconic Nintendo character along with familiar faces of the franchise, such as Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle among others, will be backing up the "Samurai Blue" in their World Cup quest after both Adidas and the Nintendo franchise reached an agreement. 




They should've used Hitmonlee instead... dude's got legs and kicks real good! Missed opportunity, Japan...

The new prologue demo-esque game for Metal Gear Solid is out now. Is Keifer Sutherland a necessary replacement over David Hayter? Do the changes to game play feel good? Also is it worth the asking price for a short story campaign? It's all up for debate... but at least there's some neat new trailers and Yoji Shinkawa art to go along with it!
